Australian defender Coyne heads to China on loan

Australian international defender Chris Coyne said Friday he has agreed terms with Chinese Super League club Liaoning Hongyun for a loan deal to keep his World Cup hopes alive.

Coyne, 31, who has played seven internationals, will fly to China on Saturday where he hopes to play regular football in the lead up to the World Cup in South Africa in June.

"It?s a great opportunity. It?s been well advertised that (national coach) Pim Verbeek wants us to go away and play football," Coyne said.

"I spoke to Pim and going over there and playing games is important and the World Cup would be the icing on the cake."

Coyne's loan move comes after his club Perth Glory were knocked out of the A-League finals playoffs by Wellington Phoenix a fortnight ago.
