Bayern assured 22nd league title as Schalke lose

Bayern Munich are virtually assured their 22nd crown as German league champions with one game left this season after they beat Bochum 3-1 on Saturday as rivals Schalke lost 2-0 at home to Werder Bremen.

The results mean second-placed Schalke are three points behind Bayern, who have a vastly superior goal difference, and the Royal Blues need to beat Mainz by more than 17 goals next weekend and hope Bayern lose at Hertha Berlin.

Bayern's Dutch coach Louis van Gaal is now almost assured the Bundesliga title in his first season in charge.

The German giants are also on course for a treble of German league, cup and Champions League titles.
