Atalanta coach Antonio Conte (pictured in 2009) has resigned from his post, according to the club, as the Bergamo-based side continues its gradual slide towards relegation from Serie A.

With only three wins and four draws from 17 matches Atalanta are only one point ahead of bottom side Siena.

Conte, a former midfielder with Juventus in the 1990s, took over Atalanta just five games into the season, succeeding Angelo Gregucci who was sacked after four defeats in a row.

Youth team coach Valter Bonacina becomes Atalanta's caretaker as the club begin their search for a new coach.
