ESPN to bring World Cup in 3-D

ESPN President George Bodenheimer is pictured in July 2009. US sports broadcaster ESPN announced Tuesday it will bring a new dimension to World Cup soccer matches from South Africa -- 3-D.

The new ESPN 3D service plans at least 85 live sporting events during its first year, starting with the opening FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico on June 11, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.

Some 25 World Cup matches will be shown in the format, as well as domestic US sports.

"ESPN's commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners," Bodenheimer said in a statement.

"ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan's viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing."

ESPN said it had tested the technology for more than two years, including events where it showed a US college football game in a limited number of theaters.

"This is a turning point for 3-D," Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro told USA Today newspaper.
