Everton's Pienaar on drink driving charge

Everton's South African midfielder Steven Pienaar (R) is challenged by Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick during a Premier League match at Goodison Park, Liverpool, north-west England, on February 20.

South Africa star Steven Pienaar has been charged with drink driving after a night out to celebrate Everton's 3-1 win over Manchester United at the weekend, police said Tuesday.

The Everton midfielder was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and charged later that day. He faces a fine and a ban from driving if convicted at a court hearing scheduled for March 9.

A police spokesman said that Pienaar, 27, had been charged with "drink driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign."

Pienaar was part of the Everton team that shocked United with a 3-1 win at Goodison Park on Saturday.
