McLeish eyes exciting signing as Zigic deal gathers pace

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish believes he is close to an exciting signing as his move for Valencia striker Nikola Zigic gathers momentum.
McLeish refused to comment on reports in England on Tuesday that he has agreed a six million pounds fee to sign Zigic, but it is believed Birmingham are the front runners to land the Serbia international.
The 29-year-old has been linked with Stoke, Blackburn, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Fulham, Everton and Tottenham.
But McLeish looks likely to win the race and he said: "There are irons in the fire. We've been linked with one or two players, we have put in bids for players.
"It would be unfair of me to talk about names at the moment. It would be unfair to the clubs and also to the fans if things don't happen.
"But I think they will be excited about one or two of the names we are pursuing and what we are trying to add to the squad is players of quality."
Zigic has scored 16 times in 42 appearances for Serbia and is set to start for his country in the World Cup.
He won't be the only new arrival at St Andrew's during the close-season as McLeish is also looking at Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia and Fulham left-back Paul Konchesky.
