Rangers out to finish title winning season on a high

Celtic's players celebrate scoring against Rangers during a Scottish Premier League match at Celtic Park, Glasgow, Scotland, in January. Neil Lennon will try and use Celtic's final game of the season against Hearts to land the manager's job at Parkhead on a permanent basis.

After the disappointment of their midweek defeat to Celtic Scottish international midfielder Kevin Thomson is determined that Rangers sign off their season on a high with a win over Motherwell at Ibrox on Sunday.

The champions will finally be presented with the Scottish Premier League trophy after clinching their second title in a row two weeks ago.

Walter Smith's men lost to their bitter rivals in the final Old Firm game of the season in a match that only had pride at stake. But Thomson has already banished the memories of that game and urged his teammates to give the fans something to celebrate against European chasing Motherwell.

"We want to bow out on a high by defeating Motherwell," the Rangers player said.

"It feels as though we have been waiting a long time to receive the trophy because we secured the title a couple of weeks ago now. It's really just been a case of trying to get across the finishing line.

"It's fantastic to have won the league again and we are deserved winners. But it goes without saying we would like to end the season on a high by beating Motherwell. That would put everyone in a real mood to party."

Rangers will be without a couple of key men for their final bow of the season. Keeper Allan McGregor injured his knee against Celtic and Lee McCulloch is suspended after his red card in the fixture.

The match could also be the swansong appearance for a host of players including prolific striker Kris Boyd, DaMarcus Beasley, Nacho Novo, Steven Smith and Kirk Broadfoot who are all out of contract in the summer.

Craig Brown's squad come to Ibrox on the back of their stunning midweek comeback against Hibernian. The Fir Park side were 6-2 down before Lukas Jutkiewicz scored in injury time to seal a 6-6 draw in the highest ever scoring match in SPL history.

The Steelmen only need to match Hibs' result away to Dundee United at Tannadice to clinch the final Europa League spot.

Neil Lennon will try and use Celtic's final game of the season against Hearts to land the manager's job at Parkhead on a permanent basis.

A decision is expected within the next ten days and the interim boss, who has won seven in a row in the league including Tuesday's Old Firm derby, says the players have finally started to show their quality at the end of a rare trophy-less season.

"In the past few weeks, the players here have shown they can play for the club and can handle the expectation," the Hoops boss said.

"But it will be a new season and a lot of circumstances will change over the course of the four of five weeks of the close season."

Rugby Park will play host to a tense relegation play-off between Kilmarnock and Falkirk on Sunday. The Bairns know they need to win if they are to avoid the drop as Killie sit two points above them but manager Steven Pressley is in confident mood.

"We know what we need to do now and we're confident we can do it," the Bairns boss said.

"You shouldn't fear the challenge, you should relish it and we'll do that."

Aberdeen bring down the curtain on a disappointing season away to St Mirren. The Dons have won just twice in 19 games and will finish Mark McGhee's first season in charge in ninth position.

St Johnstone host Hamilton at McDiarmid Park with the two sides battling to finish top of the pile in the bottom six of the table.
