Scotland are to lose one of their two Champions League places starting from the 2011/12 season, the Scottish Premier League announced Friday.

Thursday's Europa League results for Belgian clubs saw them overtake Scotland into 15th spot in European football governing body UEFA's co-efficient ranking table.

The loss of a Champions League spot is potentially a huge financial blow to the Old Firm of Rangers and Glasgow who have monopolised Scottish places in European club football's premier competition.

This week both Glasgow giants revealed half-yearly results which showed the huge difference that playing in the Champions League group stage can make to a club's balance sheet.

Scottish champions Rangers announced a profit of just over 13 million pounds (20 million dollars) in interim results for the six months up to the end of 2009.

By contrast Celtic's profits for the same period were down to 1.27 million pounds (1.98 million dollars).

"Our clubs are sorted for next season," said an SPL spokesman. "It's for the season after that that Belgiums are now above us."
