Spurs star Woodgate has surgery in Australia

Newcastle striker Mark Viduka vies with Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate (right) during their Premier League match at White Hart Lane, London in 2009.

Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has had surgery in Australia in a bid to cure his long-standing groin problem.

Woodgate, 30, will remain in Australia for three weeks to recover and Spurs manager Harry Redknapp admitted on Friday that the England centre-back is unlikely to play again this season.

"The people there feel they have the right answer. Will he play again this season? There is no real chance," Redknapp said.

Injury-plagued Woodgate has made just three appearances this season, with his last game the 9-1 win over Wigan in November.
