United can't afford to dwell on Chelsea defeat: Vidic

Nemanja Vidic admits Manchester United cannot afford to dwell on their potentially devastating defeat against title rivals Chelsea.

Sir Alex Ferguson's team ended a dismal week with a lacklustre 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Old Trafford which left them two points behind the Blues with only five matches to play.

Conceding the title advantage to their closest rivals was the final indignity for United four days after a 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat at Bayern Munich.

That last minute loss in Germany was made even more painful by the ankle ligament injury suffered by England striker Wayne Rooney which will rule the United star out for another two weeks.

With Rooney still sidelined, Bayern will fancy their chances of knocking out United in the second leg on Wednesday and Serbian defender Vidic knows his team-mates must get the Chelsea result out of their minds quickly if they are to avoid a surprise exit.

"We were down after the Bayern game but we cannot afford to be down again," Vidic said.

"We need to get our heads up and face the facts. We have lost two games but we shouldn't feel sorry for ourselves.

"We need to seize the moment and make sure we finish well this season."

Rooney could be back in action by the derby against Manchester City on April 17 and Vidic is confident United will still be in the title race as long as they win their remaining matches.

"Chelsea have just the league and the FA Cup to focus on, which helps them, but if we win all five games then we still have a good chance," he said.

"I hope there will be more twists and turns and there will be more dropped points before the end."
